| Notation on back of "Bowl of Zinnias"
painting |
Mignon autograph in "Plantation Memo" |
| The
notation in pencil -- "Clementine's First oil painting"
-- on the back of "Bowl of Zinnias" bears a strong
resemblance to Francois Mignon's handwriting and is probably
his. Most notable is the stylized curlicue rendition of the initial
capital letter "F" and the truncated scrawl of the
letters at the end of the word "Clementine's" on back
of the painting and the end of the word "Francois"
in the autographed copy of "Plantation Memo". The date
of the notation is unknown, but it was most probably made by
Francois at the time the painting was being readied to go to
Saint Louis, Missouri for the Saturday Gallery Exhibition. |
