"Of all the photographs taken of
Francois, this is my favorite. (The original is in the archives
of the Cammie G. Henry Research Center.) It is the look he got
on his face when he was recounting a story, a serious, introspective
visage that, at the story's end, would spread into a smile --
accompanied by the hint of a wink in his eye. Francois was very
kind to me as a child and all through the years I knew him. He
was a wonderful storyteller. My brothers and cousins and I would
sit in his house and, with mouths agape and eyes agoggle, listen
to his magical tales of happenings on Melrose, stories that could
change with each retelling but were always accepted as perfectly
true. The same incident simply happened again, just in a different
way.
